Political journalists give advice to P&P students

by Kelsey Kresge

Five political journalists shared their personal experiences in the field and gave career advice to the 13 Presidency and the Press participants.

When you’re a journalist, a good story can come from anywhere. “You don’t know who you’re talking to when you’re out and about; it could be anyone,” said Eric Jackman, a graduate of Franklin Pierce University.

The guests consisted of Eric Jackman, Mike Jackman, Robert Michaelson, Stephanie Lewis, and Erica Tomaszewski; all who have continued their interest in journalism and politics past college. Their current occupations include anything from that of Eric Jackman, who is running for state rep, to that of Tomaszewski, who is the grant writer for Lil’ Iguana, a child safety foundation.

Tomaszewski shared her own piece of advice: “Be very confident when doing anything in journalism or politics.”

The graduates have attended numerous political conventions. For Mike Jackman, attending a political convention is what got him interested in politics. Jackman believes that people can make a difference at any age and be powerful when they have knowledge and experience.

The guests stressed the importance of being prepared out in the field and asking questions that people want to know.

After the discussion was finished, all of the speakers were given t-shirts celebrating the tenth year anniversary of the Fitzwater Center at Franklin Pierce University to thank them for their service.
