Former senator Rick Santorum said that his presidential campaign is a grassroots effort today in an interview with the Presidency and the Press conference.

“We have the engine and were slowly linking up the train cars,” said Santorum.

His statement came in response to a question about his low poll numbers. An NBC/Wall Street Journal poll ranked Santorum fourth compared to candidates Mitt Romney, Ron Paul, Michele Bachmann, Newt Gingrich and Tim Pawlenty. Santorum however, is undiscouraged.

When asked how he felt about his chances given his failed 2006 Senate run, Santorum cited Abraham Lincoln, who won the presidency after losing the senate race. “I think I’m in good company,” he said.

This is Santorum’s twenty-second visit to New Hampshire in his political career. Santorum said he admires New Hampshire’s “live free or die” motto, especially in regards to its private sector. New Hampshire boasts one of the nation’s lowest unemployment rates according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Santorum said that he will be moving on to Iowa soon and will return to New Hampshire August 13th.
