Presidency and the Press

Respective field directors Jacob Avery and Derek Scalia sat down to speak to Presidency and Press participants Wednesday morning.

Both speakers shared anecdotes of mistakes they had made in their past campaigns.  Scalia worked for a presidential candidate in 2004 where he learned people working in his position “need to be very mindful” of media’s presence.

Avery added, “Be knowledgeable of where you’re at and who you represent.”

Avery and Scalia claimed their jobs as field directors to be demanding. “There are no days off,” Avery said. “We have to prepare for volunteers and make sure they are taken care of. Every little aspect.” Scalia chimed in.

Part of Scalia and Avery’s job is to hold the media accountable for what is published. Scalia explained the media is a campaign’s voice and it is important for the media to announce true reports.

Avery left the student audience with important advice: to get involved with an internship.  The field directors said it was vital to intern at an office if politics interested the student.
